My research has two main foci:

1.     Simulating the effects of global change and changes in atmospheric composition on the structure and functioning of terrestrial ecosystems, ecosystem services through the Holocene to the future. Vegetation dynamics, species distributions and biodiversity at global, regional and local scales are a particular focus.  My research over the years has involved both development and application of various models including the forest gap model FORSKA2, STASH, Biome, LPJ and LPJ-GUESS.

2.     Developing and applying  theories of plant species co-existence, the maintenance of biodiversity and ecosystem functioning with particular regard to the role of historical land use. The research has centred on field, GIS and modelling studies in cultural landscapes on the Baltic island of Öland.
